Acne

Nodular acne is a sever and disfiguring skin disease. Although acne is considered by many to be a disease of adolescents, a person can be affected with acne into his or her 30s and 40s. Males tend to get more severe acne than females.

Acne develops in the oil producing structures of the skin call sebaceous glands, which vary considerably in structure and size. One or more sebaceous glands accompany each hair follicle. These glands secrete an oily mixture call sebum which normally passes though the hair follicle to the skin surface. During adolescence, the sebaceous lands grow larger and produce more sebum, especially in the face, chest and back areas. Acne occurs when the normal route of sebum to the skin surface is blocked. In the case of nodular acne, the sebum builds up in the gland and mixes with dead cells. This accumulation finally ruptures the follicle wall, forming an inflamed nodule under the skin. Scarring usually results from these nodules.

Acne is not cause by a poor diet, dirt or an oily complexion. Factors that may aggravate acne include emotion stress, fatigue, cosmetics, drugs such as iodides and bromides, and certain foods

Accutane (isotretinonin) is a medicine use to treat sever nodular acne which has not responded to other treatments. To help you get the greatest benefit from Accutane it is important for you to know how to take it correctly and what to expect. For your own health, safety and well-being, please read the following information carefully.

Palomar Medilux
Patients with these conditions that have been resistant to treatment or those who are desirous of treatment with this advanced technology are encouraged to consult with us.

The Medilux delivers intense pulses of light at wavelengths that are absorbed selectively by different structures in the skin. Our yellow light will destroy brown spots. Green light will remove red and brown pigments.

In addition these treatments will improve the skin tone and texture through the regeneration of collagen. Collagen is the elastic framework that keeps the skin from wrinkling and aging. As we age collagen is damaged by free radicals that are produced by sunlight, gravity, smoking and other immune factors. Biopsied skin after treatment when viewed under the microscope shows healthier looking collagen.

Very importantly, these treatments are called non-ablative. They do not traumatize skin. Most patients are able to return to works after treatments without any redness or pain. . In contrast, laser treatments are invasive resulting in thick scabs and prolonged healing time.

We are excited about violet light treatment for acne. It is a great addition to our established acne treatments. Patients who have failed Accutane or who are resistant to internal and topical medications, may find these treatments effective. Violet light works by destroying sebaceous glands and killing bacteria found in acne.

Acne rosacea, is a disease characterized by pimples, dry spots, and broken blood vessels. This disease is progressive and often resistant to treatment. The green light will absorb red pigmentation and help fade these blood vessels. Treatment will also help prevent rhinophyma, the enlarged red nose which is the complication of rosacea.

Brown spots or lentigos seen in sun damaged skin can be treated with yellow light. The treated areas will often form a darker brown scab. This scab falls off in one to two weeks leaving the treated area lighter.

Patients who may be interested in seeing if they are candidates for this treatment are invited to make an appointment for a consultation.
